What Are Peptides, Really?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up collagen, elastin, and keratin in your skin. On their own, individual peptides are tiny fragments of these larger proteins. Applied topically, certain peptides are small enough to reach living skin cells and act as chemical messages, prompting those cells to behave a certain way: produce more collagen, calm inflammation, or support the skin's repair processes.
How They Communicate With Skin Cells
Think of peptides less like an ingredient that physically changes your skin and more like an instruction sent to it. A peptide binds to a receptor on a skin cell and triggers a specific response inside that cell. It's a signalling system your skin already uses on its own — topical peptides are simply adding more signal.
The Main Types You'll See on a Label
- Signal peptides — prompt fibroblasts (the cells that build collagen) to increase production.
- Carrier peptides — deliver trace elements like copper into the skin, supporting enzymatic repair processes. This is the category GHK-Cu (copper peptide) belongs to.
- Enzyme-inhibiting peptides — slow the enzymes that break down existing collagen, helping preserve skin structure over time.

What the Research Actually Shows
Peptides are among the better-studied ingredients in modern skincare, though the depth of evidence varies by peptide. Copper peptides in particular have decades of published research behind them, including laboratory studies showing meaningful increases in collagen synthesis and documented roles in wound repair. Other peptide categories have thinner but still promising evidence. As with most skincare actives, results are gradual and cumulative rather than immediate.
How to Add Peptides to Your Routine
Peptides are generally gentle enough for regular use and pair well with hydrating, barrier-supportive ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Apply peptide serums to clean skin before heavier creams or oils, and give them time — most of the research behind them measures results over weeks, not days.
